|Connections Weekend in York
Abstraction and the Arabesque -an inspirational approach to design and creative embroidery with Alex and Julia Caprara
20-21 March 2004, Monkbar Hotel, York
This is a follow up course to the very successful Connections Weekend York held by Opus in 2003. This exciting weekend workshop will focus in particular on sketchbook ideas and ways for using these as an inspirational source for more experimental embroidery.
York Minster provides a wonderful setting for inspirational study and our focus on the patterning and decorative features of the architecture will provide a rich source of study for further development in terms of abstract design and composition. You will learn how to develop your experience of working in sketchbooks, ways for using the camera as a tool for sourcing ideas, experimental approaches to design and ways for making the all important transition from a visual starting point, to a more abstracted textile composition.
The first day will be spent partly in the beautiful location of York Minster and partly in the studio workshop. An important aspect of the course will be a development of ideas begun last year when we began to develop inspirational sketchbooks. The second day will build on the previous day's studies, exploring ways for interpreting your ideas using experimental approaches to stitched textiles, and starting a resolved textile composition.
By the end of the course you will have more confidence when working in an external location. You will be able to make the transition from initial inspirational starting points, through to more abstracted designs and textile samples, and plan and begin a more resolved textile composition based your sketchbook ideas.
This course is aimed to help students who would like to learn how to collect visual information from a location visit and although the weekend is designed as a complete unit, it is possible for students to enrol for only one day as there is much to be learned within each day's programme. The programme is suitable both for students who attended the 2003 Connections Weekend York and for those who were not able to join us at the previous event. All levels are welcome, but please note that this weekend is particularly suited to Beginners and Intermediate level embroiderers.
On Saturday the class will meet at the Monkbar Hotel to be introduced to the programme. This will be followed by a visit to York Minster, lunch back at the hotel and then an afternoon practical design workshop. The Sunday workshop at the hotel will focus on experimental approaches to design and stitched textiles, ways for developing a composition and starting a more resolved textile idea.
The fee for each day is £65 and this price includes lunch and tea and coffee. For more information, or to book a place please contact us either through our internet enquiry form or telephone us on 020 8864 7283
